It may seem like stating the obvious to suggest that planning what sort of holiday accommodation to book is a good idea. But it's all too easy to get carried away by glossy brochures, seductive photos and unrealistic expectations.
With the internet to hand, it's really easy to do some research and find a holiday home and destination that's just right for your requirements, but that means you need to spend some time beforehand deciding exactly what you need and eliminating the too expensive, the too impractical and the just plain mad options.
Starting with the More Eccentric Options
It's possible (if that's what floats your boat) to choose a seriously eco-friendly holiday in a vanishingly remote spot where there's no electricity and the butcher's van only calls once a week. Think carefully before you decide to choose this option – it may rain the whole time you're there, and the romance of the remote could wear off very quickly.
If, on the other hand, that type of holiday mirrors your real life quite closely, the pioneering vacation could be for you. Hewing wood and drawing water in an alternative environment, watched by condors and mountain goats instead of seagulls and sheep could be an appealing choice for holidaying eco-warriors.
On a More Serious Note
On the other hand, if you're taking small children or elderly relatives with you on holiday, it would be wise to consider such things as the range of transport links and activities available to keep your whole party entertained.
If you have small children, holiday accommodation with secure outside space is always a bonus. If you're taking elderly relatives, check to make sure that your holiday destination isn't very hilly and that your accommodation doesn't have unmanageable stairs. Charming, picturesque self-catering cottages can have unexpected hazards for anyone with restricted mobility.
If you are travelling with a mixed party, make sure that your accommodation has enough bathrooms for all the various groups. Some self-catering accommodation is generously supplied with extra showers and en-suite facilities, but some isn't, so make sure you choose the level of bathroom provision that's right for your party.
Transport Links
Holidaying in a group can be great fun, but if you decide to choose this option, research local transport links and affordable local activities before you go. A group holiday is much more fun if you can all choose something different to do from time to time and then meet up over dinner to share experiences.
Booking a large property as a group has distinct bonuses (such as shared baby sitting and shared accommodation costs) and a little careful forward planning can go a long way towards making a good holiday great!
Taking the Easy Option
Obviously one of the easiest holiday options with a mixed party is to spend your vacation time at somewhere like Disneyland or Centre Parks, which takes all your individual requirements into account and provides you with the perfect holiday solution.
After you've tried this package approach a few times though, you may feel inspired to be more adventurous and make up your own bespoke holiday, which is, I hope where this article may help.
Holidays can be magical, forging lifelong memories for friends and families alike, so it's worth spending some time and energy planning ahead and choosing the accommodation that's ideal for your own individual requirements!
